What remains in my memory is the sight of my mother practicing dancing.
The image of my mother’s dignified posture and mannerisms still lingers in my mind.
After the disaster, my mother stopped dancing, but even though I wanted to carry on her feelings along with her kimonos, I found myself unable to do so.
And the reality is that even if people have sentimental attachment to these items, they are treated by others as worthless and discarded.
Feeling frustrated that Japanese culture is not being treated as culture, and with the sole desire to protect Japanese culture from Niigata, I launched “Mine”.
With world-class Japanese technology
A one-of-a-kind hospitality space
Modern Japan is in an age of overabundance and disposable culture. However, kimonos are a one-of-a-kind item in the world, created through an astonishing number of processes and with layers of emotion.
“Mai-on” proposes a shift from an “age of wearing” to an “age of appreciating,” a shift that does not discard Japanese culture, but instead moves towards a new era, and will help you design a unique space that makes use of our world-class technology.
Creating a new genre in spatial design
In today’s world where productivity is emphasized and mass-produced products are in abundance, kimonos are one-of-a-kind pieces, made using traditional techniques and with no two alike.
Re-upcycling these fabrics and breathing new life into them will harmonize with the circular society of the future and create a new genre in spaces that welcome customers from all over the world.
The thoughts behind the brand name
Influenced by my mother’s dancing, I became attracted to the “spirit of Japan.”
The fabrics I make from beautiful kimonos and obi sashes have an exciting, heart-pounding feel to them, so I named it “Maine” – a play on the word “mine.”
Even if something may be worthless to someone, a kimono made with Japan’s wonderful traditional techniques can be brought back to life with modern technology as “mine (something for us modern people).”
